Reflection Letter
When I began my English 113A class last spring semester I wasn't sure of how difficult the course would be. I was already feeling a bit uneasy since I did not start the Fall 2015 semester as I was supposed to due to my incompletion of the Early Start program. To be honest the English 113A course was not too difficult. Professor Jackson went at a good pace for her students which helped with comprehending. Professor Jackson made it clear of what she expected of her students. Her workshops helped me improve my writing, through the marks made on my papers, and the errors I saw when revising others papers. In my current English 113B course with Professor Alvarez he has helped me to analyze and interpret the text. Often times more than not when I read literature I take things too literally. Seeing the true message through the text is something that has always been difficult for me.
Professor Alvarez has done a fantastic job when it comes going into depth and making the conversations more fun to participate. He does this by using real world examples that made it easy for his students to relate. Another thing that has always been a struggle for myself as a writer is beginning an essay. Getting started is always difficult for me because you need to make sure that you have a solid idea that you can write pages off of. From my last two semesters what I have taken away to stop from having writers block is to just keep writing. If you write down all of your thoughts then you are able to go back on your writing and extract a few ideas from your thoughts. If you never write anything down or brainstorm then it is even more difficult to begin writing your essay.
I have learned in my SI class that another key when writing the UDWPE along with all other essays is making sure that you read the prompt and that you are on topic. This is a common error found in writing, that people go off topic and don't answer what the prompt is asking. This is an error that I used to have prior to entering my English 113A and 113B courses here at CSUN. I now make sure that I pay close attention to the prompt and make sure I answer what it is asking of me. One thing I was surprised about in both my English 113A and113B courses was that we did not read as many books or texts as I expected. One thing that I have not improved that I had wished to when entering college was expanding my vocabulary. Not through vocabulary tests, but through reading more books or articles.
As much as I dislike reading I do wish I would have been able to expand my vocabulary and speech through reading and presenting more in front of the class. I do think that the department could have a bit more emphasis on that, even though it is a writing course. Being able to read in front of people and express comprehension is just as important as being able to write. I have had many international students in my two semesters here at CSUN, and as smart as they are and as well as they can write, many are afraid to read or speak in front of others. I believe that I am prepared for the UDWPE, because my SI course this semester with my English 113B course has put emphasis on understanding what is expected of us on the test. My SI leader Roger has gone through UDWPE prompts and examples with us to help us prepare for when we have to take the UDWPE. Although my two courses in the English 113A and English 113B courses have gone okay I did expect to become a little bit of a better writer. Both courses have not been as rigorous as I had expected as entering into college.
